Cascade trays

A cascade tray is a type of contact device in which the tray deck is divided into several successive cascades (steps) positioned at different elevations. Liquid flows from one step to the next like a waterfall, while the rising vapour stream passes through the vertical streams of descending liquid, fundamentally changing the tray hydrodynamics

Cascade trays are used in large-diameter vessels where issues typical of large-scale equipment arise. These trays are used in wash sections where resistance to fouling is more important than efficiency.

About

Spliteks manufactures cascade trays based on the best engineering solutions developed by Sulzer Chemtech. These cascade trays for distillation columns are an efficient type of contact device specifically designed for large-diameter vessels and complex separation conditions.

Operating principle of cascade trays

Cascade trays operate on the principle of multistage liquid flow. The tray surface is divided into several cascades (steps) positioned at different heights. The liquid flows successively from one step to the next, forming a cascade similar to a miniature waterfall. At the same time, the rising vapour passes through the descending liquid streams, creating intensive turbulent contact.

This mechanism significantly increases the mass-transfer area and phase-contact time compared with conventional sieve or valve trays. This increases the efficiency of distillation and component separation.

Design features

Cascade-tray designs feature increased mechanical strength and carefully engineered hydrodynamics. The main components include:

  • Stepped sections with liquid-transfer elements.

  • Special guides for ensuring uniform liquid drainage.

  • Reinforcing ribs and supports designed for large-diameter columns.

The trays are adapted to specific units, from atmospheric to vacuum columns. They are particularly effective in large-diameter distillation columns, where conventional trays often cause uneven flow distribution and reduced efficiency.

Comparison with other tray types

Unlike conventional sieve and valve trays, cascade designs handle large liquid volumes more effectively and provide more intensive contact in the lower and upper sections of the tray. They occupy an intermediate position between conventional trays and packing, combining the advantages of both types.

In distillation columns, cascade trays often make it possible to reduce vessel height or increase capacity without major reconstruction.

Manufacturing and purchasing

Its own manufacturing facilities in Serpukhov enable cascade trays to be produced to the individual parameters of each column. Materials are selected with due regard to the operating temperature, pressure and composition of the media.

Cascade trays can be purchased directly from the manufacturer. Delivery throughout Russia is arranged with a complete set of documentation.

Spliteks cascade trays are a modern, reliable solution for increasing the efficiency of mass-transfer equipment in the oil and gas, chemical and other industries.
