Scallops

Spliteks has begun manufacturing reactor scallops, which Sulzer Chemtech previously did not manufacture in Russia. These elements form an outer slotted screen along the inner surface of the shell and are used in catalytic reforming and platforming reactors. The scallops securely retain the catalyst bed and provide directed flow from the walls towards the centre of the vessel.

Advantages

Large open area and minimal hydraulic resistance ensure stable operation across the entire flow-rate range
The necessary clearances for thermal expansion prevent catalyst carryover and slot plugging through the use of triangular-section wire
Strict control of scallop verticality, straightness and twist tolerances ensures reliable and stable reactor operation

About

Purpose and operating principle

Scallops are installed around the reactor circumference to form an annular filtering screen. They redistribute the feed flow from the periphery towards the central zone, ensuring uniform passage through the catalyst bed.

This design prevents catalyst carryover, minimises stagnant zones and maintains stable hydrodynamic conditions. The use of a Johnson screen with triangular-section wire in the scallops ensures highly accurate slots and efficient feed distribution with minimal hydraulic resistance.

Design features

The devices are manufactured from high-alloy stainless steel resistant to high temperatures and aggressive media. Each component has precise geometric parameters that ensure a close fit against the reactor shell and compensate for thermal expansion.

Design advantages:

  • Large open area with low flow resistance.

  • A slotted screen that prevents catalyst from falling through or being carried over.

  • Demountable design for convenient installation through manways.

The scallops are adapted to the specific vessel diameter and process conditions, including continuous catalyst regeneration (CCR) reforming units.

Advantages of Spliteks solutions

Reactor scallops ensure stable unit operation over a wide load range. Johnson-screen technology combines high throughput with precise filtration, reducing pressure drop and increasing the overall efficiency of the catalytic process.

Key advantages include:

  • Minimal risk of slot blockage.

  • Long service life at high temperatures and pressures.

  • Straightforward installation and replacement.

These characteristics extend the run length between turnarounds and increase unit capacity.

Manufacture and supply

The company’s own manufacturing facilities in Serpukhov enable scallops to be produced with high precision and strict quality control. The material and geometry are selected individually for the customer’s project.

Scallops can be purchased directly from the manufacturer, with prompt delivery throughout Russia. Spliteks offers a complete package for the supply of reactor internals, including calculations, manufacture and installation supervision.

Spliteks scallops are a reliable, advanced solution that provides effective protection and uniform operation of the catalyst bed in modern catalytic processes in the oil and gas industry.
